History - Douglas & Company

The Douglas Company

George Bruce Douglas had a strong influence on the industrial development of Cedar Rapids. He worked first in his father's cereal business, which became The Quaker Oats Company. George and his brother Walter started, Douglas & Company, which produced linseed oil and later, cornstarch. The company grew into one of the largest cornstarch plants in the world. It also processed corn into animal feed, soap stock, cornstarch, and corn oil. In 1919, the plant was destroyed by a devastating explosion, the worst industrial accident in Cedar Rapids history.
