As cities grew in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the wealthy could escape the increasingly crowded and dirty environment in town. They retreated to the "country" and built estates. More than a mansion, the typical country retreat included formal gardens, model farms, and recreation facilities. Brucemore is an excellent example of country living in the midwest.
